University of Alabama football star along with Don Hutson and Paul "Bear" Bryant; as a Washington Redskins tackle (1937-46), he partook in the famous 73-0 thrashing the Redskins took from the Chicago Bears in the 1940 NFL title game -- for which the Redskins got revenge in a 1942 title game against the Bears. Handsome signature in blue ballpoint on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1983 September 30. Fine. Also, an unsigned Autograph Note on the verso of an admirer's 8½" X 3½" note to him, mentioning his Redskins years and sending a newspaper clipping (present). With original envelope.
Condition: Very Good. First Edition, hardcover 8vo, 340pp, original dust jacket with color pugilist art by John [Walter] Scott. Anthology collecting stories from earlier Popular Publications magazines. Boxing on the jacket front, baseball book ad on the rear, stories on golf, baseball, golf, boxing, football, even racing. Very Good plus overall, with moderate toning, faint pencil on the endpapers; jacket with heavy spine fading, light edge wear, paper repairs on the verso at the spine ends, brief pencil on the front flap. Still packs quite a visual punch. Since these hardcover sports books were often read by like-minded owners, editions are not often found in collectible quality.
