The night that an African-American boy's father is apprehended by the sheriff for stealing a ham to feed his family, the guards shoot their dog, "Trueno." The shattered family and the dog survive despite their crippling wounds. The boy searches neighboring towns for his father, who is serving a long sentence on a work gang. The youngster meets an old man who becomes his teacher and friend. Some years later when the father comes home, Trueno is the first one to welcome him. This clear and simply told story has some tragic elements, but is a positive portrayal of courage, human dignity, and the power of love.
