The History of America - Hardcover

One can question the need for another survey of American history; this book is a good but flawed effort. Collins, a former teacher and now a freelance writer, broadly chronicles America's story, from colonization through the election of President Clinton. Social and cultural highlights are woven with political and economic developments and beautiful illustrations to form a breezy narrative that captures the reader's interest. However, these strengths are diluted by serious omissions in content for the post-World War II era. While African Americans, Native Americans, and women receive excellent coverage in the book's first sections, neither the Civil Rights nor the feminist movements are discussed at a length appropriate to their importance. These omissions--which are particularly odd, as the chapters on this period otherwise have merit in what they include--detract from a readable book appropriate for both young readers and adults. School and public libraries may wish to consider purchase.
