Grade 6-10-A concise, well-written discussion of the disease starting with Dr. Alfred Velpeau's first accurate description based on a patient autopsy in 1827. The text explains what leukemia is, its symptoms, and the difficulty of diagnosing it. Sections are devoted to causes, prevention, and social and economic impact. Treatments including chemotherapy, radiation, and bone-marrow transplants are addressed and the authors look at some of the new methods on the horizon. A few black-and-white photographs and some statistical graphs and sidebars break up the text. An informative and useful update to Dorothy S. Siegel and David E. Newton's Leukemia (Watts, 1994).
