This thoroughly revised and updated edition reflects the current explosion of information regarding the understanding, identification, and treatment of addictive disorders. Doweiko offers detailed coverage of the most commonly abused chemicals and their effects, covering a single facet of a drug or alcohol problem in each focused chapter. Doweiko covers topics frequently left out of other books, such as aerosols, steroids, and over-the-counter analgesics. In addition, you'll find in-depth coverage of such topics as the differences between abusers and addicts; drug effects on children, teenagers, and pregnant and nursing women; and children of alcoholics.

Dr. Harold E. Doweiko is a licensed psychologist who has been on staff at the Gundersen-Lutheran medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, for 19 years, working with the substance abuse rehabilitation program, the chronic pain management program, and the traditional adult mental health patients, including "dual diagnosis" patients. Dr. Doweiko has served as an adjunct faculty member for colleges in both Wisconsin and Minnesota, most recently with the Viterbo University counselor education program in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Review:
"It has been difficult to find good texts for my courses, but Concepts of Chemical Dependency has been an excellent book to use and I intend to continue using it as long as it remains as well done as it has been in the past. . . Chapter 19 on addiction as a disease of the human spirit is as clear and simple an explanation as I've ever encountered on the spiritual aspects of addiction. Well-done. When I teach this chapter, most students have an 'ah-ha' experience."

"Doweiko's book has a lot of positive things going for it. In addition to covering most of the routine topics, it also covers some of the important topics that are left out of many books. For example, Inhalants and Aerosols, Anabolic Steroid Abuse, and Over-the-Counter analgesics give the text a great deal more practical value than some of its competitors."
