Through their thoughtful and accurate balance of developmental, clinical-diagnostic, and experimental approaches to child and adolescent psychopathology, Eric Mash and David Wolfe's ABNORMAL CHILD PSYCHOLOGY remains the most authoritative, scholarly book in today's abnormal child psychology market. Appropriate for novice and expert alike, this book traces the developmental course of each disorder and shows how biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors interact with a child's environment. This MEDIA EDITION gives students a chance to see how troubled children behave in their homes, in their schools, and in their communities, reinforcing the author's commitment to providing students with access to real children in their natural settings. Through the power of CengageNOW, students now have access to an unparalleled personal learning system. Since one of the best ways to introduce students to a particular problem of childhood or adolescence is to first describe a real child, the authors begin each chapter with engaging first-person accounts and case histories of a child with a particular disorder. This child is then referred to throughout the entire chapter, illustrating the categorical and dimensional approaches used to describe disorders, as well as bringing life to the theories Mash and Wolfe present. Embracing today's world with leading-edge coverage of the DSM-IV-TR and dimensional approaches to classification, Mash and Wolfe's comprehensive introduction covers many topics: evidence-based assessment and treatment, contemporary research and cutting-edge theories related to the predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype, early-onset and the developmental propensity model of conduct disorder, the triple vulnerability model of anxiety, the tripartite model in children, depression, and autism.

About the Author:
Eric Mash is a professor of psychology at University of Calgary in Canada, where he enjoys teaching undergraduate classes in abnormal child psychology, behavior modification, and developmental psychopathology as well as graduate classes in clinical psychology, specifically in child psychopathology, child assessment, and child psychotherapy. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Florida State University, and completed his residency in clinical child psychology at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Eric commits much of his time and energy outside of the classroom to researching the topics of abnormal child psychology, child and family assessment, child psychotherapy, and child development. Particularly interested in attention-deficit disorder and conduct problems, and in families in which children have been physically abused, Eric has contributed and published many journal articles and books on these topics. He is also a Fellow of the American and Canadian Psychological Associations, and has served on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals and grant agencies at local and federal levels.
Review:
"This is an outstanding text, beautifully rendered, visually appealing, and intellectually first-rate. It is undoubtedly the best undergraduate textbook I have encountered on the subject, covering all major disorders in a way that is informative to both novice and expert alike. Richly referenced and sprinkled through with interesting and instructive case anecdotes, this textbook is scientifically state-of-art. There simply is no better text for introducing students to the subject of child psychopathology."

"I think your text helped me reach my objectives and face the challenge of teaching this course. I am glad to have used it, and will recommend it to my graduate students who teach Abnormal Child. I will use it again." "The text is very readable and engaging. The inclusion of case examples helps to illustrate the diagnostic issues, humanize the material, and diminish the density of the more 'academic' information. The figures, tables etc. provide interesting bits of information that help maintain the readers attention and illustrate important issues."

"The students find the book accessible and the case vignettes, etc. make learning the material more fun."

"Of all the undergraduate texts on abnormal child psychology, it is simply the best." "I found the text very readable, and I believe my students agreed that the writing was accessible, clear, and interesting." "The integrative developmental psychopathology perspective is excellent and unique. The writing is clear and accessible. The organization of the book overall and of each chapter makes sense - I never had the annoying experience of wondering why something was included in any of the chapters. And the text seems really up-to-date with the most current research."
