Barrier Island - Softcover

9780449131794: Barrier Island
There are two kinds of men in Mississippi. They make natural enemies. And sometimes, but only if the balance between strength and weakness tips too far, unnatural allies.
Tucker Loomis is a hard and dangerous man with a ruthlessness all West Bay fears and respects, and an improbable amount of money. Wade Rowley is a common man who aspires to honor but gets caught up in the footwork of a skilled swindler.
In a pitiless game, with a few harsh rules and just one way of keeping score, the wrong man will die. And another will get away with more than murder.
"Lively, gritty . . . complex and convincing . . . Mr. MacDonald writes with passion!" -- The New York Times Book Review

About the Author:
John D. MacDonald was born in Pennsylvania and married Dorothy Prentiss in 1937, graduating from Syracuse University the following year and receiving an MBA from Harvard in 1939. It was Dorothy who was responsible for the publication of his first work, when she submitted a short story that he had sent home while on military service. It was initially rejected by Esquire but went on to be published by Story magazine - and so began MacDonald's writing career. One of the best-loved and most successful of all the masters of hard-boiled crime and suspense, John D. Macdonald was producing brilliant fiction long after many of his contemporaries had been forgotten, and is still highly regarded today. The Executioners, possibly the best known of his non-series novels, was filmed as Cape Fear in 1962 and 1991, but many of the crime thrillers he produced between 1953 and 1964 are considered masterpieces, and he drew praise from such literary greats as Kurt Vonnegut and Stephen King, who declared him to be 'the great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller'. His novels are often set in his adopted home of Florida, including those featuring his famous series character Travis McGee, which appeared between 1964 and 1985. He served as president of the Mystery Writers of America and in 1972 was elected a Grand Master, an honour granted only to the greatest crime writers of their generation, including Ross MacDonald, John Le Carre and P. D. James. He won many awards throughout his long career, and was the only mystery writer ever to win the National Book Award, for The Green Ripper.

Store Stamped. --- --- BARRIER ISLAND --- Real-estate tycoon Tucker Loomis had planned to make the island a millionaire's playground. Then the Feds wanted it back and he decided he could soak the government for a cool ten million. The only obstacles were a mistress with a big mouth and a real estate man who somehow retained his integrity. --- DEATH SQUAD --- (The second book in the Sgt. Edmund Roersch series) --- They were cops by day. They did their jobs, played it square, busted the pimps, junkies, rapists, and murderers that held the city hostage, and then watched in disbelief as they were turned onto the street again by the revolving door of the criminal courts, or plea bargained their way to light sentences. Vigilantes by night . But there was only one law now, and they embraced it and took it to the streets with more deadly purpose than the criminals they hunted. They were The Death Squad. . . .See photos for additional content. . . Seller Inventory # 40182
