Believe it or Else Basketball (Basketball Edition) - Softcover

This is Nash and Zullo's latest offering of bizarre and zany sports tales (e.g., The Baseball Hall of Shame , Ballantine, 1985). A few tales bear repeating. For instance, the authors tell of the 1949 hotel shooting of former Chicago Cub Eddie Waitkus by a crazed fan who had become obsessed with him. The incident formed the basis of a fictional story that is more widely known: The Natural by Bernard Malamud (1952). It's a pity that Nash and Zullo don't document their short pieces, although they do cite the assistance of the Baseball Hall of Fame when appropriate. Most tales are hilarious. Young adults will especially appreciate this book. It's an optional buy of course, though it will circulate well in most popular collections.
