Wiseman's seventh novel, a two-part story, focuses on a Cologne youth gang. During World War II particularly such groups of petty delinquents provided a form of resistance to the Nazis. In the first episodes during 1939 a group of neighborhood adolescents defies authority in a cat-and-mouse game with the corrupt lower-level Nazi bureaucrats and police. Then amidst the bombings and rubble of late 1944 some of the same characters accrue political trappings in their continued battle with the ever-more-murderous authorities. Unfortunately, Wiseman has not developed this potentially engaging material in a very gripping manner. Characters remain drearily one dimensional; the plot wanders aimlessly. The author does succeed in capturing the mood of moral and physical desolation in Cologne in the last months of the war. An occasionally haunting but often empty novel. James B.
