Light wear, binding tight and square, contents clean and unmarked.382pp. Oncological emergencies can relate either to the cancer itself or is treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are necessary to prevent major morbidity or mortality. Optimal outcomes in these patients rely on recognition of early symptoms and signs and use of the appropriate therapy. This book covers cancerrelated and treatmentrelated oncological emergencies and their management in a clear, accessible style through the use of bullet lists, algorithms and key points to ensure effective and immediate treatment and management. As the number of cancer patients receiving treatment is increasing, so the number of clinicians encountering emergencies is rising so clear guidelines dealing with possible complications should prove invaluable. The book is aimed primarily at trainees in oncology and oncologists and will also be useful to primary care doctors and nurses and those working in emergency medicine. h3Doody Review Servicesh3 bReviewer58;bDiely A Pichardo, MDNorthwestern University Feinberg School of MedicineBRbDescription58;bThis moderately detailed reference book summarizes the management of oncologic emergencies, both common and uncommon, and touches as well on the less urgent complications of cancer and its treatment. It combines text with well done and tothepoint algorithms which make the book useful both for relaxed studying time and for a quick review when one of these emergencies is encountered in practice.BRbPurpose58;bThe authors intend this book to be a guide for general practitioners to manage lifethreatening situations related to cancer complications. This is a worthy objective considering that most patients will be seen first by internists and emergency room physicians before getting to an oncologist. This objective is met relatively well and I am sure that the algorithms in this book will be lifesavers in many clinical situations.BRbAudience58;bAccording to the authors, this book is directed to family physicians, internists, hospitalists, and emergency medicine physicians. I would add that this is a good book for oncologists and oncology fellows to have because it touches on topics that are pertinent in the ongoing care of cancer patients. Some topics could even be considered as palliative care such as management of anthracyclininduced cardiomyopathy and chronic radiation complications.BRbFeatures58;bThe book covers the complications of cancer and chemotherapy, dividing them by system cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, e.g. It includes a whole chapter on pediatric emergencies and some others in topics not usually found in oncology books such as psychiatric emergencies including adjustment disorder and dermatologic conditions. The best feature of the book is the use of algorithms for quick problem solving. In addition, for oncologists, it is an interesting review of other areas of medicine that we may have started to forget such as urologic emergencies: the management of gross hematuria. The book has few illustrations and even fewer are in color but they are of good quality and useful, especially the pictures related to spinal cord compression and CNS involvement. A drawback of the book is the rather broad interpretation of the term emergency and, even though this could be seen as an advantage in that it includes information we didnt anticipate, this approach can dilute the content. For example, included as emergencies are the management of chronic cancer pain and chronic CHF due to anthracyclins or Herceptin. Again, this may be very useful for oncologists to palliate our patients symptoms, but that may scare away or prematurely bore a reader who is just interested in what the title of the book implies: real lifeordeath emergencies.BRbAssessment58;bI dont think I have seen another book like this. The alternative is to read the corresponding chapter in the large oncology textbooks or review articles. I do think that having this book as a refe. Seller Inventory # 100116286
