James J. Guy was born in Montreal and studied political science at Concordia University (Loyola), Fordham University, and Saint Louis University where he received his Ph.D in political science and international law in 1975.
A professor of political science at Cape Breton University, James Guy established and chaired the new Department of Political Science in 1994. In addition to CBU, Professor Guy has taught at the University of Kentucky, Saint Louis University, Indiana University, Bellarmine College (Louisville), Mansfield University, PA)and the University of Prince Edward Island.
In addition to contributing to the Encyclopaedia of Public Policy and Administration and the Encyclopaedia of Politics: The Left and Right as well as numerous academic journals in Canada, the United States, Europe and South America, Professor Guy has written a number of well-received books. These include How We Are Governed, Expanding Our Political Horizons, and seven editions of People, Politics and Government. His hobbies include boating, aboriculture and birdwatching, and performs as a percussionist and bassist with the Cape Breton Orchestra, and a 28 piece swing band called The Right Stuff.
